Google and its avalanche of new AI capabilities

Google I/O took place on May 20, and I'm sure I'm not alone in still trying to absorb everything that was announced. I love The Verge's recap of the announcements, especially its highlights video of the keynote (32 minutes pulled from the original 2-hour presentation). I recommend watching the video if you haven't had a chance to review the announcements. Veo 3 has garnered a lot of viral attention, but there's so much more. Designers should be aware of Google's acquisition of Galileo AI, which it has integrated into a new Google offering, Stitch.

Claude 4's giant leap forward

Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude 4 represents a significant leap forward in its support of both everyday tasks and coding. You can get a quick sense of the capabilities in Anthropic's 4-minute "A Day with Claude" video, including its ability to integrate with Google (Docs, Email) and Asana. The demos are an impressive solution to real-world problems using MCP (Model Context Protocol). Claude 4's writing feels markedly "human" in a way that previous models (from Anthropic and others) have not. Its coding capabilities, by all reports, are unparalleled, giving Lovable and other vibe coding tools, which use Claude as their basis, a huge upgrade.

Building with AI

A step-by-step guide to working with Lovable

With the release of Claude 4, there is no better time to give Lovable a spin. Felix Haas's excellent step-by-step guide for working with Lovable emphasizes using clear descriptions, emotional language, and specific brand guidelines. He encourages designers to think in terms of flows (not features).

Designing for AI

Embracing play as a framework for building with AI

ICYMI: My favorite AI-related talk from Config. Lane Shackleton and Mihika Kapoor show how the concepts of constraint and exploration – elements that make toys so compelling – can be applied to AI product development. Their six key practices:

  • Craft with constraints

  • Invite serendipity

  • Color outside the lines

  • Build for yourself

  • Include the starter kit

  • Share your toys
